Age and License Requirements by Powersports Vehicle Type

May 7, 2026 · 6 min read

Age and license requirements for powersports rentals come from three sources: state law, trail/water system rules, and individual rental owner policies. Platform minimums add a fourth layer. Understanding which applies to your situation — and confirming compliance before you book — prevents the frustrating scenario of arriving at a rental pickup only to find out you don't qualify to ride.

ATV rental age requirements

For adult-sized ATVs (90cc and above) rented on P2P platforms like ThrottleShare:

  • Platform minimum: Most P2P platforms require renters to be 18 or older to create an account and complete a booking as primary renter
  • State law minimums for operation: Most states allow adults 18+ to operate ATVs on designated OHV areas without restrictions; minors 14-17 often need parental consent and may need a safety certificate
  • Individual owner policies: Owners may set higher minimums (21+, 25+) or require a valid driver's license even though state law may not require one for OHV operation
  • Trail system rules: Private trail systems often set their own minimums that are stricter than state law — confirm with the specific system before your rental date

UTV / side-by-side rental age requirements

  • For the driver: same as ATV requirements above — 18+ on most platforms, subject to owner and trail system rules
  • For passengers: UTVs are the most family-friendly powersports vehicle; most owners permit passengers of all ages who can fit properly in the seat with the seat belt engaged
  • Most manufacturer safety guidelines recommend a minimum age of 8-12 for UTV passengers based on seat belt fit and physical development — not necessarily a legal minimum but a safety standard rental owners often adopt
  • Some trail systems set minimum age requirements for all occupants of any vehicle accessing the trails — confirm before booking

Jet ski and PWC rental requirements

Watercraft rental has the most variable and most actively enforced age and certification requirements of any powersports category:

  • Florida: Minimum age 14 to operate PWC. Boating safety course completion required for operators born on or after January 1, 1988 — this effectively means all renters under ~38 years old need a boater education card
  • Texas: Minimum age 13 with boating safety card
  • California: Minimum age 16 with California Boater Card (required for all boaters regardless of age as of 2025)
  • Michigan: PWC operators must be at least 12 years old with a boating safety certificate; operators under 16 must have adult supervision
  • General watercraft platform standard: 18+ to be the primary booking renter on most P2P platforms, with the platform-listed operator required to hold applicable state certifications

For watercraft rentals, the boater education card requirement is the most common compliance gap. Complete an approved online boating safety course (3-4 hours, NASBLA-approved courses work in most states) before your booking date if you're in a state with requirements.

Snowmobile rental requirements

  • Most states: minimum age 16-18 to operate a snowmobile unsupervised on public trails
  • Many groomed trail systems require all operators to hold a valid driver's license or state-issued photo ID — not necessarily a snowmobile-specific license
  • Minnesota and Wisconsin (the highest-volume snowmobile trail states) require operators under 16 to have completed a snowmobile safety education course
  • P2P platforms typically require 18+ for primary renters; owners can specify additional requirements in their listings

Dirt bike rental requirements

  • For OHV trail use: most states allow 12+ to ride appropriately-sized dirt bikes with adult supervision; 16+ for unsupervised trail riding in most states
  • P2P platform minimum: 18+ as primary renter
  • Private OHV parks often have higher minimums — verify with the specific park
  • Road-legal operation (dual-sport, enduro) requires a valid motorcycle endorsement in all states

What to have with you at pickup

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport)
  • Boating safety certification card (for PWC rentals in applicable states)
  • Signed rental agreement (may be handled digitally through the platform)
  • Credit card for security deposit authorization
  • Any additional documentation requested by the specific owner in the listing
