Idaho River and Trail Powersports Rental Guide

Idaho mountain trail with river valley below

Idaho is underrated as a powersports destination, mostly because people from outside the state focus on the skiing and don't realize what's waiting when the snow melts. The Snake River corridor alone offers hundreds of miles of rideable terrain. The Sawtooth range has trail systems that connect to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Coeur d'Alene and the Panhandle have some of the clearest lakes in the country. And Boise's own foothills have more ATV-accessible ridge trails within 30 minutes of downtown than most major cities have in their entire metro.

Trail riding: Boise Foothills and Owyhee Range

The Boise foothills trail network is massive — over 190 miles of multi-use trails within the city limits, with BLM land extending south into the Owyhees for truly remote riding. The Owyhee Canyonlands are some of the most dramatic terrain in the West: volcanic plateaus, slot canyons, and desert rivers. Dirt bikes and lighter ATVs are better suited here than heavy side-by-sides. Locals in the Boise, Nampa, and Caldwell area rent their trail bikes and ATVs frequently during the April–October season.

Best vehicle for Owyhees: 450cc–700cc dirt bike or lightweight single-seat ATV. Expect $120–$180/day.

UTV country: Salmon River Mountains and Clearwater

North-central Idaho around Salmon, Challis, and Grangeville has extensive OHV trail systems through national forest land. The Nez Perce–Clearwater National Forest operates hundreds of miles of designated ATV routes, many connecting to remote backcountry campsites. This is multi-day UTV trip territory — owners in Salmon and Lewiston area rent full-size side-by-sides suitable for loaded, technical mountain riding.

Best pick: Can-Am Defender or Polaris Ranger with cargo bed for backcountry trips. $300–$450/day, with delivery available to trailheads.

Watercraft: Coeur d'Alene and Priest Lake

Coeur d'Alene Lake is 25 miles long, exceptionally clear, and ringed with marinas. Jet ski rental demand here is some of the highest in the Pacific Northwest. Local owners near CDA and Post Falls rent Sea-Doos and Yamaha WaveRunners through ThrottleShare. Priest Lake, 75 miles north, is quieter and preferred by families — pontoon boats and kayaks dominate, with some personal watercraft near the south end.

Twin Falls and the Snake River Canyon are surprisingly good for jet ski riders willing to do flatwater riding in a dramatic geological setting. Access points off Highway 30 and near Thousand Springs State Park make launch logistics straightforward.

Paiute ATV Trail System (bordering Nevada)

Idaho shares part of the Paiute ATV Trail system with Nevada and Utah. Riders entering from Rogerson or Twin Falls can access 2,000+ miles of interconnected desert trail. This is long-haul ATV touring at its finest — but you need the right vehicle. Full-size UTV or a well-equipped ATV. Locals in Twin Falls and Burley rent purpose-built trail machines seasonally.

Permitting and access notes

  • Idaho requires OHV registration for vehicles used on public land — $18/year for residents, $30 for non-residents.
  • National Forest travel maps are mandatory for backcountry Idaho trails. MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map) shows which roads and trails are open to motorized use.
  • Fire season can close trails June–September in dry years. Check idahoforfire.org before heading into the backcountry.
  • Coeur d'Alene Lake: 5 MPH no-wake zones apply within 200 feet of shore and in designated swim areas.
