Spring Season Launch Checklist for ThrottleShare Owners

Spring outdoor recreation preparation

The difference between a rental owner who earns $8,000 in a season and one who earns $22,000 in the same market isn't the vehicle they own — it's how early they show up. Renters planning summer lake trips, Memorial Day weekend rides, and spring ATV outings start searching in February and March. The owners who are listed, photographed, and priced correctly in March capture those early bookings. The ones who launch in May fight over the leftovers.

Step 1: Vehicle inspection and service (February–March)

ATVs and UTVs

  • Oil and filter change. Use manufacturer-specified weight for spring/summer (usually SAE 10W-40 or 5W-50 depending on model).
  • Air filter inspection — replace if stored with a dirty filter or showing any moisture damage.
  • Battery: check voltage (should be 12.6V+ at rest), load test, charge if needed. Replace if more than 3 years old.
  • Tires: check pressure and inspect for sidewall cracks or unusual wear. Cold storage can create flat spots on some tires that take a few rides to work out.
  • Brake fluid: flush if more than 2 years since last change. Brake fade in summer heat is dangerous.
  • Drive belt (CVT models): inspect for cracks, glazing, or edge wear. A drive belt failure mid-rental ruins the experience and your review score.
  • Test ride: do a full test ride before the first rental booking. Run through all gears, verify 4WD engagement, test brakes at low speed. Fix problems now.

Watercraft (jet skis, pontoon boats)

  • Flush cooling system with fresh water, check impeller for debris damage (rocks, weeds).
  • Engine oil and filter change on 4-stroke models. 2-stroke oil reservoir check and fill.
  • Battery: same requirements as above. Watercraft batteries are particularly prone to winter discharge issues.
  • Hull inspection: check for any impact damage from last season. Fiberglass chips or cracks should be addressed before water contact.
  • Registration: ensure current year stickers are applied and visible on the hull before first launch.
  • Fire extinguisher, flares, and throwable PFD: verify all required safety equipment is current and accessible.

Step 2: Listing refresh (March)

New photos make a measurable difference in booking conversion. Take photos in good natural light (golden hour is ideal — morning or evening, not midday harsh sun). Shoot the vehicle clean, from multiple angles, and in the environment where renters will use it. A jet ski photographed on a beautiful lake beats a jet ski photographed in a garage, every time.

Update your description with any changes from last season: new features added, updated pricing rationale, new delivery areas you've added. Review your cancellation policy and make sure it still makes sense for your market.

Step 3: Calendar and pricing setup (March–April)

Open your entire summer calendar in one session. Block the personal dates you already know you'll use the vehicle. Leave everything else open. Set your base rate for weekdays, your weekend rate (typically 15–25% premium), and your peak rates for holiday weekends. Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day should all have separate pricing blocks already set by April 1.

Step 4: Gear and accessory inventory (April)

Helmets: inspect for damage, clean thoroughly, replace chin straps if cracked. For ATV/UTV rentals, having 4 matching helmets in good condition dramatically improves the professionalism perception. Life jackets: inspect for waterlogging, mold, or strap damage. Replace any jacket more than 5 years old or showing UV degradation on the foam.
