Thanksgiving and Winter Powersports Rental Guide
Thanksgiving weekend is one of the most underutilized rental opportunities in the powersports calendar — and one of the most geographically bifurcated. In northern markets (Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, New England), a good early-November snow event can open snowmobile season just in time for Thanksgiving weekend. In southern and desert markets (Florida, Arizona, Texas, Nevada), late November is peak powersports weather — cool enough for comfortable riding without summer heat.
Northern markets: the Thanksgiving snowmobile gamble
Snowmobile availability over Thanksgiving weekend is entirely snow-dependent. In a normal year, the Upper Michigan Upper Peninsula, Northern Wisconsin, and the Adirondacks get their first trail-quality snowfall in mid-to-late November — sometimes just before Thanksgiving, sometimes just after. Owners in these markets start getting booking inquiries in October from renters hoping to be the first out of the season if conditions cooperate.
The smart booking approach: contact owners in your target market in early November, express interest in Thanksgiving weekend, and agree on a conditional booking — if trails open by Thanksgiving, you're confirmed; if not, no charge. Many owners are willing to make this arrangement rather than risk losing a booking entirely.
Early-season snowmobile demand destinations: Eagle River and Minocqua, WI; Ironwood and Calumet, MI; Tug Hill Plateau, NY; Rangeley and Greenville, ME.
Glamis, CA (Imperial Sand Dunes) is the exception that proves the rule: Thanksgiving weekend at Glamis is the single largest OHV gathering in the country — 150,000+ riders descend on the California desert dunes. It's summer-level demand in November. Book 6–8 weeks ahead.
Southern markets: peak Thanksgiving riding weather
While northerners are waiting for snow, the South is enjoying some of its best riding weather of the year. November in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and the Carolinas brings temperatures in the 55–70°F range with low humidity — perfect for ATV trail riding and motorcycle trips without summer heat. The Hatfield-McCoy trail system in WV is still open and usually has excellent conditions. Croom Motorcycle Area in FL is at its best in November.
For watercraft, Gulf Coast owners keep jet skis and pontoons active through November in most years. Water temperatures remain 68–75°F through early December in Florida and Alabama Gulf waters.
December and January rentals: the winter rhythm
After Thanksgiving, winter rental demand splits cleanly by geography. Northern markets focus exclusively on snowmobiles and (in some areas) ice fishing equipment and fat-tire e-bikes on frozen lakes. Southern markets continue their ATV, motorcycle, and watercraft seasons with minimal interruption. Desert markets — Phoenix, Las Vegas, Albuquerque — are in their prime riding season: cool mornings, sunny days, no humidity.
Christmas week and New Year's week are secondary peaks in both snowmobile country and warm-weather markets — families traveling home for the holidays often want an outdoor activity day. Owners in both market types should price these dates at 20–25% above baseline and ensure availability is open through at least January 5.
