California jet ski and boat rental rules checklist
California watercraft renters should confirm California Boater Card requirements, operator age, PWC/life-jacket rules, safety gear, and local waterway restrictions before pickup.
Verify before pickup
Rules can change and local restrictions can be stricter than state guidance. Owners and renters should verify current requirements with official agencies, land managers, marinas, trail systems, community rules, and insurance providers before a rental starts. This page is not legal advice.
Checklist
- California Division of Boating and Waterways says that effective Jan. 1, 2025, all motorized vessel operators are required to complete a boating safety course and obtain a California Boater Card.
- The California Boater Card program says the card is required for all motorized vessel operators regardless of age as of Jan. 1, 2025.
